Starfall Odyssey Review

Published September 3, 2026

Eighty hours in, Starfall Odyssey still surprises me. Not with twists for their own sake, but with consequences — a trader I ignored in hour three reappeared in hour sixty with a fleet, a grudge, and a price.

The writing carries the game; the systems mostly stay out of its way. Ship combat is serviceable rather than spectacular, but it occupies maybe fifteen percent of the runtime. Where Odyssey excels is in making you feel the weight of command: rations, morale, and mutiny are real mechanics, not cutscene theater.

Performance is clean on mid-range hardware at 1080p, and the 2.4 patch finally fixed the Linux save bugs that kept it off our launch recommendation list. This is the version the game always deserved.

Strengths

  • Exceptional branching narrative
  • Meaningful crew relationships
  • Fair, generous update support

Weaknesses

  • Slow first two hours
  • Occasional Linux-specific save quirks (patched in 2.4)
Our Verdict: Starfall Odyssey rewards patience with one of the strongest branching stories of its generation. Stick past the slow opening and it rarely puts a foot wrong.

Platform Notes

Identical on Windows and macOS. On Linux, enable the Steam Proton 9 build for best stability.
